Duratron PAI: Duratron 4203 & Duratron 4301 (also known as Torlon)
Duratron PAI (previously known as Torlon PAI) offers a range of versatile performance capabilities and proven performance in a broad range of applications such as high temperature applications, or applications where mechanical performance and dimensional stability are essential.
Its ability to resist elevated temperatures and to perform under severe stress conditions at continuous temperatures of up to 260°C makes Duratron PAI the highest performing melt processable plastic.
Duratron PAI mechanical parts provide greater compressive strength and higher impact resistance than most advanced engineering plastics.
Duratron T4203 Polyamide-imide (PAI) yellow-ochre
Offers the best toughness and impact strength of all Duratron PAI grades. Because of its intrinsic high temperature resistance, high dimensional stability and good machinability, this extruded grade is very popular for precision parts in high-tech equipment. In addition, its good electrical insulating ability provides numerous possibilities in the field of electrical components such as connectors, switches, relays, ball bearings and rollers.
Duratron T4301 Polyamide-imide (PAI + graphite + PTFE) black
The addition of graphite and PTFE provides higher wear resistance and lower coefficient of friction compared to the unfilled grade as well as little or no stick-slip in use. This grade excels in severe wear applications such as non-lubricated bearings, seals, bearings cages and reciprocating compressor parts.
Duratron T4501 Polyamide-imide (PAI + graphite + PTFE) black
This compression moulded material is similar in composition to Duratron 4301 PAI, and is selected when larger shapes are required.
Duratron T4503 Polyamide-imide (PAI) yellow-ochre
When larger shapes are required, that are similar in composition to Duratron 4203 PAI, this compression moulded Duratron 4503 Polyamide-imide should be chosen.
Duratron T5530 Polyamide-imide (PAI-GF30) khaki grey
This 30% glass fibre reinforced grade offers higher stiffness, mechanical strength and creep resistance than Duratron 4203 PAI. It is well suited for structural applications supporting static loads for long periods of time at high temperatures. The suitability of this material for sliding parts, however, is to be carefully examined since the glass fibres tend to abrade the mating surface.
Duratron PAI (Torlon) Characteristics
- Very high maximum allowable service temperature in air (250°C continuously)
- Excellent retention of mechanical strength, stiffness and creep resistance over a wide range of temperatures
- Extremely low coefficient of linear thermal expansion up to 250°C
- Excellent wear and frictional behaviour (particularly Duratron 4301 PAI)
- Inherent low flammability
- Exceptional resistance against high energy radiation (gamma & X-rays)
- Excellent UV-resistance
Duratron PAI (Torlon) Technical Notes
As Duratron PAI has a relatively high moisture absorption rate, parts used in high temperature service or made to tight tolerances should be kept dry prior to installation. Thermal shock resulting in deformation can occur if moisture laden parts are rapidly exposed to temperatures above 200°C.
