PPSU / PEI / PSU: Sheets & Rods
Polyphenylsulphone (PPSU), Polyetherimide (PEI) and Polysulphone (PSU) are all amorphous thermoplastic materials that have a lot of features in common, and all three offer a combination of excellent mechanical, thermal and electrical properties.
Polyphenylsulphone (PPSU) black -
PPSU is a high performance properties make it an an amorphous thermoplastic that offers high impact strength and chemical resistance. PPSU exhibits increased hydrolysis resistance it, making it specifically engineered for repeated steam sterilisation applications.
Polysulphone (PSU) yellow, translucent -
PSU is another amorphous thermoplastic offering a strong combination of excellent thermal, electrical and mechanical properties. PSU is produced from non-UV stabilised polysulphone resin and offers very good radiation stability, low ionic impurity levels and good chemical resistance and hydrolysis resistance. Compared to PEI, PSU has a lower property profile and often replaces polycarbonate when higher temperature resistance, improved chemical resistance and autoclavability are required.
Polyetherimide (PEI) amber, translucent -
PEI is an advanced polymer with properties such as outstanding thermal, mechanical and electrical properties, together with very low flammability and low levels of smoke evolution during combustion. These features make PEI extremely suitable for electrical insulators and for a variety of structural components requiring high strength and rigidity at elevated temperatures.
PPSU / PSU / PEI Characteristics
Polyphenylsulphone (PPSU) Characteristics:
- High maximum allowable service temperature in air (180°C continuously)
- Good chemical and excellent hydrolysis resistance (suitable for repeated steam sterilisation)
- High stiffness over a wide temperature range
- Very high impact strength
- Physiologically inert (suitable for food contact)
- High dimensional stability
- Translucent, non-optical quality (except for PPSU which is black)
- Very good resistance against high energy radiation (gamma & X-rays)
- Good electrical insulation and dielectric properties
Polyphenylsulphone (PPSU) Technical Notes
Since unfilled / unreinforced amorphous thermoplastics inherently possess a low wear resistance and high coefficient of friction, PPSU is not recommended for use in friction & wear applications (this also applies to PEI and PSU).
Polysulphone (PSU) Characteristics
- High maximum allowable service temperature in air (150°C continuously)
- Good hydrolysis resistance (suitable for repeated steam sterilisation)
- High strength and stiffness over a wide temperature range
- Physiologically inert (suitable for food contact)
- Good dimensional stability
- Translucent, non-optical quality (except for PPSU which is black)
- Very good resistance against high energy radiation (gamma & X-rays)
- Good electrical insulation and dielectric properties
Polysulphone (PSU) Technical Notes
Amorphous thermoplastics like PSU are sensitive to stress cracking when in contact with polar solvents (e.g. ethyl alcohol). Environments, which might be completely harmless to unstressed parts, may cause stress cracking with highly stressed parts (this also applies to PEI and, to a lesser extent, also PPSU).
Polyetherimide (PEI) Characteristics
- High maximum allowable service temperature in air (170°C continuously)
- Very good hydrolysis resistance (suitable for repeated steam sterilisation)
- High strength and stiffness over a wide temperatures range
- Inherent low flammability and low levels of smoke evolution during combustion
- Good dimensional stability
- Physiologically inert (suitable for food contact)
- Very good resistance against high energy radiation (gamma & X-rays)
- Very good electrical insulation and dielectric properties
Polyetherimide (PEI) Technical Notes
Cooling liquids of the soluble oil type should not be used when machining PEI since they are likely to induce environmental stress cracking. For this material, the most suitable coolants are pure water or compressed air (this also applies to PPSU and PSU).
