Food Compliant Materials
Food compliant materials are materials that are intended to be in contact with food. These can be things that are quite obvious like a container, but also machinery in a food factory.
During the contact of the food contact materials with the food, molecules can migrate from the material to the food. Because of this, in many countries regulations are made to ensure food safety.
A new line of food compliant engineering plastic materials have been launched that will allow food manufacturers to meet the European Union’s directive on food contact materials.
Engineering plastics suited to food contact applications are mainly targeted at a range of machine plastic parts used in food processing such as guiders, bushings, housings, thrust washers, forming plates and scrapers. Industries that can benefit from food compliant materials include bakeries for use in tunnel ovens and forming, dairy processing and packaging, meat processing equipment and beverage processors and fillers.
Using plastic materials in the food industry means that there are higher demands on the components in your equipment, more frictional heat, more wear, more aggressive, and hotter cleaning. Food compliant engineering plastics have been designed to offer chemical resistance against cleaning and sanitizing substances used in food processing, and the blue colour helps trace any potential plastic content in processed food. Self-lubrication and high wear resistance also enables food compliant products to deliver low maintenance costs.
