Tufnol Glass Laminates: Sheets & Rods

Tufnol Glass Laminates consist of glass fabric reinforced grades with wide ranging properties, determined by the resins used to bond the laminations. All of these materials are characterised by very high strength properties, good temperature resistance and good dimensional stability. Tufnol Glass belongs to the range of high performance laminates branded under Tufnol.

The Tufnol glass range includes grades with exceptional temperature resistance, first class dielectric properties, good resistance to tracking, assessed flammability and superb structural strength and toughness.

Epoxy glass materials are used in a very wide range of technically demanding applications, whilst other glass laminates tend to be used for more specialised purposes, or where higher temperature capabilities are required.

Tufnol Glass Characteristics

Epoxy Glass Fabric Products

A range of high quality epoxy resin bonded glass fabric laminates

Tufnol Grade 10G/40

The most widely used grade, suitable for continuous use at temperatures up to approximately 130°C. (Class B).

Tufnol Grade 10G/41

Similar to 10G/40, but with controlled flammability.

Tufnol Grade 10G/42

Made with an epoxy resin which offers increased mechanical strength at higher temperatures. Suitable for uses up to 155°C (Class F).

Tufnol Grade 10G/44

Similar to Grade 10G/42, but with improved retention of strength after heat ageing

  • Very high mechanical strength with low moisture absorption
  • Exhibit excellent electrical properties under both dry and humid conditions
  • Rigid materials with good dimensional stability
  • Good resistance to a wide range of working environments

These high performance materials are used for a very wide variety of applications where high strength, rigidity, dimensional stability and electrical performance are required.

Applications such as insulation in large turbine generators, components for cryogenic super conducting magnets, high strength bolt insulation in structures, jigs for electrochemical machining and structural insulation for high performance electronic equipment, these are typical of the many uses to which these materials are put.

Due to their high glass fibre content they are not machined as readily as cotton or paper grades and are not normally suitable for applications involving wear.

Phenolic Glass Fabric Products

Tufnol Grade 10G/24

A general purpose grade with excellent low smoke and toxicity performance in fire tests. Good insulator for use in Class F temperatures. High mechanical strength.

  • Good electrical insulation
  • High mechanical strength
  • Exceptionally good fire properties
  • Excellent weather resistance
  • Can be used in long-term applications in outdoor or marine environments

The specially formulated resin of Tufnol Grade 10G/24 gives exceptional performance in fire tests, over and above the properties found in standard phenolic materials. This results in controlled flammability, good resistance to ignition and excellent low smoke and toxicity values.

Silicone Glass Fabric Products

Tufnol Grade 10G/50

A laminated plastics material made from woven glass fabric, bonded with silicone resin. High temperature resistance up to 200°C or above. Excellent dielectre properties and low loss tangent.

Silicone resin for heat resistance and low loss dielectric properties in high frequency applications

  • Good resistance to high temperatures
  • Very good electrical insulation properties especially in applications involving very high frequencies
  • Suitable for use at temperatures up to 200°C
  • Withstand short term exposure to 240°C
  • Very good retention of properties (thermal endurance) at temperatures up to 200°C
  • Good flammability performance

The silicone resin used to bond the laminate gives TUFNOL Grade 10G/50 first class dielectric properties, including high insulation resistance and low loss tangent and permittivity. This ensures good performance in electrical applications at high frequencies.

10G50 grade is used for a wide variety of electrical and mechanical applications where its particular combination of properties makes it an ideal choice. It is equally at home as insulation in Class H electrical equipment, or used on a conveyor carrying components through a hot oven process.
