Tufnol phenolic cotton materials are the workhorse grades for general mechanical applications. They are strong and tough with very good wear resistance and they are easy to machine into finished components.

Tufnol Sheets are available with cotton fabric reinforcements, ranging from fine weave to coarse. In general, the medium to coarse wave grades are used for larger and more rugged components, requiring good all-round strength and toughness. The finer grades are chosen for their superior finish, higher dimensional stability and improved strength in thin sections.

The electrical properties also tend to be superior in the finer weave grades, but the range includes a medium fabric weave, with enhanced electrical properties, suitable for electromechanical application. The two most widely used cotton fabric grades are Carp Brand and Whale Brand.

There are several ranges of Tufnol Grades that we stock, and are available in a combination of sheet, rods, tubes, and plate format..

Carp Brand Tufnol

Premium fine weave grade for quality components

Carp Brand is a top quality grade for mechanical and electromechanical applications. It is made from a premium quality fine weave cotton fabric which has been specially treated to enhance the machinability and other properties.

• Strong with good wear resistance
• Excellent machining qualities
• Low water absorption
• Good dimensional stability
• Electrical properties are excellent for this class of material.

Carp Brand is used for a wide variety of components where premium quality is required. It is often chosen for components with intricate features which need accuracy and a fine machined finish. Typical components include fine toothed gears, cams, geneva wheels, seal retaining rings, actuating arms, insulating sleeve and bushes, components for use at cryogenic temperatures, insulation for low and medium voltages and a wide range of other precision machined parts.

Whale Brand Tufnol

Good general purpose medium weave mechanical grade

Whale Brand Tufnol is a most useful general purpose material and is the most popular grade for a wide range of mechanical applications Whale Brand is a good general purpose medium weave grade for mechanical applications, where strength and rigidity are of high importance. Whale Tufnol is made of layers of resin woven cotton that compress under heat to form an engineering plastic.

• Excellent all round physical properties

• Good toughness
• Wear resistance
• Electrical insulation at low voltages only.

General uses, such as gears, spacers, jigs and fixtures, wear resistant components, low voltage insulation and many others.

Crow Brand Tufnol

Coarse weave grade for tough, rugged components

Crow Brand is a coarse weave grade for mechanical applications, where tough, rugged components are needed.

• Excellent impact strength,
• Good general toughness
• Wear resistance.
• Suitable for electrical insulation at low voltages.

Crow is used for mechanical applications and general uses, particularly for large components, or where fine surface finish is not a prime requirement, e.g. for large gears, jigs, wearing components, large rollers, impact blocks and many heavy duty components.

Tufnol Grade 6F/45 Epoxy Cotton

Cotton fabric based epoxy laminate, Fine weave cotton/Epoxy resin laminated plastic (SRBF – Synthetic Resin Bonded Fabric)  

This epoxy cotton laminate has a unique combination of properties, which makes it particularly useful for applications requiring extra performance. These first-class electrical properties with the fine weave cotton reinforcement, together provides a combination of properties not found in other grades.

• High electrical strength
• Exceptional resistance to surface electrical tracking
• Excellent wear resistance

This versatile grade is used for very broad range of applications, where precision a and a high quality machine finish need to be combined with electrical or mechanical performance. It is used for rotor blades in compressors, slip ring assemblies in helicopters windshield components on commercial aircraft, high vacuum components, slot wedges, coil supports in turbine generators, labyrinth seals, insulating gears in scientific instruments, electrical mounting plates and large electrical terminal blocks.

TUFNOL Rolled Laminated Fabric Tubes

Cotton fabric laminate, Medium weave cotton/phenolic resin laminated plastic tubes (SRBF - Synthetic resin Bonded Fabric)

TUFNOL Rolled Laminated cotton fabric tubes were developed to complement the range of moulded tubes. RL tubes have:

• Good mechanical strength,
• Low water absorption
• Resistant to weathering and to chemical attack by mild acids and alkalis.
• Excellent wear resistance in lubricated applications

These materials are used for many applications where strong, rigid tubes are required for the manufacture of cylindrical components. Items include mechanical or wear resistant components, such as wear rings for hydraulic rams, lubricated bearings or ball race cages. Electrical insulation components are also made.

Grade RLF/1

A fine weave fabric grade with good electrical and mechanical qualities. Machines well and is suitable for finer and more intricate components

Grade RLF/2

A fairly fine weave grade, developed mainly for its good mechanical strength, but suitable for low voltage electrical applications.

Grade RLF/3

A medium weave grade giving improved wear resistance where surface finish and intricate machining are not required. Suitable for low voltage electrical applications.
